Fast fun and furious lawn mower racing is motorsport at its most eccentric and Saturday 24 September sees the season reaching its climax in the world-renowned annual 12 Hour Race. The ultimate test of endurance for both man and machine this gruelling event requires teams of three (male and female) to drive throughout the night in an attempt to capture some of the most prestigious racing trophies in motor racing. This year's 12 Hour is switching to a new venue - Five Oaks near Billingshurst in West Sussex (RH14 9AE). Qualifying which is open to the public for the first time starts at 2.15pm with the race commencing at 7pm. As usual the teams will line up in a traditional Le Mans grid formation with the drivers running to their machines once the flag is ped.
Those machines are all genuine ride-on lawn mowers with fairly modest modifications. They use standard engines (with the governors removed) and of course run without cutting decks!
The racing is genuinely punishing: speeds can reach 50 mph and without any form of suspension other than a padded seat that's quite fast enough over a bumpy track as the competitors will only too willingly testify at the end of 12 hours.
The hard charging racers will undoubtedly be hoping for a spell of dry weather after two years of muddy conditions which have made the event an even greater challenge.
More than 30 teams are competing and there is a strong international flavour with entries from South Africa and Luxembourg.
As ever the ٣ entry fee (children free) raises money for good causes this year it's the local Ingfield Manor School for children with cerebral palsy as well as Andover-based Brave Hearts Children's Charity.
The event would not be possible without the support of many companies including Oakes Brothers Link Scaffolding Winner Plant Hire Kelsey Plant Hire and Agile ATVs.
With the previous winning team back to keep its crown old scores to settle and new faces on the block the challenge is now on for the greatest event of the year The BLMRA 12 Hour Lawn Mower Race is GO!!!
